Rex is PwC's Asia Pacific Financial Services Tax Leader. He is also PwC’s Mainland China and Hong Kong Financial Services Tax Leader. He has over 25 years of experience in providing tax consulting and planning services to the banking and capital markets, insurance and investment management sectors for numerous multinational companies in Hong Kong and across Asia Pacific.
Expertise in financial services and banking and capital markets:
Rex specialises in advising corporate and investment banks, and securities houses on corporate tax issues in relation to tax efficient business structures, financing arrangements (including equities financing), structured finance projects and leasing transactions, mergers and acquisitions, transfer pricing and regional cost recharge structures. He also provides Hong Kong stamp duty advice on securities transactions, including ETF transactions (covering both trading and in-kind creation and redemption), stock borrowing and lending, equity financing and derivative transactions.
Expertise in insurance and investment management:
On insurance, Rex provides tax consulting services on the merger of the life and non-life operations of insurers in Hong Kong. This includes assisting life and non-life insurers to settle disputes with the Inland Revenue Department, conducting tax due diligence review and post-deal advisory services for merger and acquisition transactions, and assisting the regional headquarters of multinational insurance groups to formulate the basis of recharging regional expenses to respective locations.
On investment management, Rex serves various types of investment management clients, including mutual funds, hedge funds, private equity funds, funds of funds and sovereign wealth funds. He is well-experienced in advising clients on the set-up of investment funds and related investment management structures, carried interest structures, tax implications and related structures. He also advises clients on their investments in various jurisdictions, reviews fund related documents from a tax perspective, conducts tax due diligence reviews and post-deal advisory services for merger and acquisition transactions of investment management players, and advises on the transfer pricing arrangements of investment management groups.
Rex is a member of the New Business Committee of the Financial Services Development Council, a cross-sectoral advisory body that engages the financial services industry to formulate proposals to promote the further development of the industry in Hong Kong and map out the strategic direction for its development. In particular, the New Business Committee focuses on business in financial services that enhances and reinforces Hong Kong’s competitiveness and distinctively differentiates its unique position.
Rex is a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and an Associate of the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants (HKICPA).
