8 Minutes With Una Barrett, PwC, & Wayne Walsh, Department of Justice HKSAR

Una highlights the best sources of corporate intelligence, outlining the importance of combining offline and online sources. While online databases include ongoing litigation, media records and corporate information, offline sources refer to human intelligence and human enquiries. Social media is becoming more important as a source of corporate intelligence, but only in conjunction with other source information.

Wayne focuses on the challenges of balancing the desire for greater transparency with the need for privacy. Generally, data privacy laws are uneven across jurisdictions. European and US jurisdictions tend to favour data protection. Following the Panama Papers, he is keen to stress that the issue of 'hidden' beneficial ownership is not one which is just an offshore issue.
