R&C; Outlook: Consumer goods

Top 10 cities for the world's millionaires ('000s)

Fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG)

  • Asian markets present a particularly attractive prospect for firms over the next five to ten years, as hundreds of millions of households in China and India join the middle class.
  • Regional consumer spending on household goods will rise by an annual average of 8.5% to reach US$730 billion by 2018.

Luxury brands

  • Luxury growth in Asia is slowing after a significant period of China-led growth. The impact of a clampdown on corruption is being felt but Chinese luxury buyers are also becoming more sophisticated.

Durable consumer goods and electronics

  • The consumer electronics market is in flux as newer firms challenge incumbents in the booming market for smartphones
  • Electrical appliances and housewares demand growth, in volume terms, will average about 6.6% driven largely by double-digit growth in China.
