The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) is one of the principal mechanisms under the Kyoto Protocol to tackle the problem of climate change and global warming. It allows developed countries to cooperate through CDM projects with developing countries in order to meet their own greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction commitments. CDM projects generate carbon credits (called "certified emission reductions" or CERs) which can be traded at international carbon market. The developing countries can use this mechanism as an additional source of financing for their projects. The EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU-ETS) has been the most actively traded market to date. CDM presents new business opportunities for many of China's industries such as energy and mining, industrial products and waste management. As the world's largest CDM market, China has huge potential, estimated at perhaps US$8 billion per year. There is a strong likelihood that your ongoing project activities could be eligible to participate in the CDM which would provide you with additional value. But what does a company need to do in order to benefit from this new mechanism? How can companies develop a successful CDM project? What are the ways to navigate through the numerous risks involved? In essence, how to maximise the value from CDM projects? PricewaterhouseCoopers' Carbon Market Services can help you to find solutions to these questions. Armed with sound local market knowledge, deep project experiences and wide global connections, our CDM experts are able to provide you with a seamless service over the whole project cycle. Our independent, objective and professional advice will ensure your success in the expanding global carbon markets. Our CDM services, part of our Global CDM Team led by our London office, are to serve both carbon buyers (European and Japanese governments and companies, carbon banks and speculative funds) and sellers (Chinese funded or Chinese-holding enterprises). We are particularly strong in CER sales. We help buyers to identify projects, do market and financial due diligence and document verification. For sellers, we serve as lead advisor to help them go through the whole process of a CDM project, from project preparation to structuring and executing carbon transaction, working together with other independent market players.
