If the return on investment of xEVs is not yet positive either for car makers or for electricity distributors, a combination of pollution, technical advances, social need, government policy, corporate opportunity, and competitive risk have ensured that all major auto makers are committed to their development. 520 xEV variants will be launched between 2015 and 2020. This may represent only a minority of the makers' full portfolios, but the range of vehicle types - from Mild, Full and Plug-in - Hybrids to pure EVs - is evidence of the industry's rapid evolution and commercial experimentation.
