PwC China signs food safety cooperation agreement with COFCO, AsureQuality and PwC New Zealand on the sidelines of the 2014 APEC Summit

10 November 2014, Beijing

To further enhance China’s food safety, PwC China, PwC New Zealand, and New Zealand Government-owned AsureQuality cooperated with COFCO, China’s largest oil and food suppliers to sign a cooperation framework agreement on the sidelines of the 2014 Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in Beijing on 10 November 2014. The signing of the framework agreement was witnessed by the Prime Minister of New Zealand, Rt. Hon. John Key.

The situation and demand in China is unique, brought about by the country’s rapid social advancements and the urbanization of its people. Providing safe and reliable quality food to more than 1.3 billion people on a daily basis presents many challenges and opportunities. Embracing innovative solutions which achieve the goals of attaining robust food safety standards and managing profitability will be a key cornerstone of success for food companies.

“Together with AsureQuality, PwC China will introduce international best practices in food safety and quality to China and, thereby, contribute to the sustainable development of the country’s food sector,” said Silas Yang, Asia Pacific Chairman, PwC. “The goal of APEC is to support sustainable economic growth, encourage economic and technical cooperation and to enhance human security in the Asia Pacific region - this cooperation is a shining example of APEC’s goals.”

A key challenge for the food industry is how best to manage food safety across the global supply chain while ensuring regulatory compliance. There is increasing awareness and concern regarding food security, safety, quality and sustainability; and a demand for performance improvement and transformation across the food supply chain. “Globalisation, regulatory change, resource scarcity and food fraud are just some of the issues our government, food and agricultural clients are facing, in China and elsewhere. Downward cost pressure creates strain on suppliers, and thus increases risks throughout the supply chain,” said Craig Armitage, Global Leader, PwC Food Supply and Integrity Services. Therefore, besides sharing international industry best practices with COFCO, PwC and AsureQuality will also facilitate innovative solutions for COFCO across its whole food supply chain, including food security, safety and quality.
